Langkawi - The Legend

The Legend of Langkawi is about Mashuri - a beautiful young maiden who was unjustly punished for adultery. The unjust punishment was a result of betrayal and spite of the part of those envious of her beauty and chastity.

The sentence for adultery at the time was death. Legend has it that Mashuri bled blood that was white when she was executed. In her dying breath, Mashuri cursed the island and its inhabitants. She swore that for seven generations the people of Langkawi would suffer. Apparently they did until the era of former Prime Minster of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who helped transformed Langkawi into an island that is today a major tourist attraction of Malaysia - and home to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibitions.
